10 Oct 19 Ian Wright - A Photographer’s Eye : A Retrospective on a Decade of Travel and Documentary Photography

Ian says:
'My theme is that each photographer, whether professional or amatuer, brings many influences to his or her image-making. 'A Photographer's Eye' explains the evolution of my personal approach, illustrated by images made in the period since 2006.

Why we photograph, what we photograph, how we photograph, edit and present, and what images provoke an emotional response in us - all reflect our backgrounds, personalities and histories. For example, the tradition I fall within is about ‘windows’ – I am using the language of photography in an attempt to reveal something about the world whereas 'creative' photography is more about ‘mirrors’ – expressing the feelings, ideas, thoughts, imagination and personality of the artist/photographer - often at its core is aesthetics - exploring visual form for its' own sake - beautiful things photographed in beautiful ways. Of course, this division is somewhat unreal – all photography is some combination of window (observation) and mirror (imagination) combined with craft skills - and I will explore this.

In the first session, I will show a series of individual images which reflect my personal style and range and the ideas which underpin my images. The focus is on photography as a visual language. Audience participation will be invited and expected. As editing is such a vital part of the creative process, I will demonstrate a number of examples of images taken through the process from the original Raw file to the final print master. I will also be bringing some physical prints to display.

A 'back story' is the bedrock of my own love of image-making and in the second session, I will show a series of photo essays.'

Sam Gregory - More than a Image: A Journey into Landscape
With classic vistas and dramatic scenes from all around the world, Sam will discuss what in his eyes makes a compelling landscape image. However, it's not just the traditional genre that Sam partakes in, in fact his work sometimes steps firmly outside the traditional into extractions of form, energy and flow. This more abstracted approach can cause friction with the classic scenic vista approach and it's a requirement for working professionals to wear many 'hats'. As such, Sam will also discuss this aesthetic dichotomy from a commercial perspective. All the while elaborating on just how powerful the process of image making can be for your wellbeing both physically and mentally. Essentially, it's a personal obsession, and he will expand on this principle that it's definitely "more than an image”.
